Charlotte and Lillian
Charlotte and Lillian

This is very similar to Don't Start, an earlier series which starred Frank Skinner and Katherine Parkinson as a warring couple, but instead is staged as a conversation between a housebound retired pensioner and a do-gooding charity worker. It's a fairly standard "differing viewpoints" setup, with the unnecessarily modern Charlotte battling with the more traditionally minded Lillian.

Charlotte is designed to hit the "millennial" stereotype, being viewed by Lillian as self-obsessed, phone-obsessed, overly dramatic and just a bit pointless in general. Contrastingly, Charlotte views Lillian as a doddery, feeble-minded, bigoted and technophobic throwback.

They fight crime. (In this scenario, "crime" is next door's cat.)

It doesn't have quite the same spark of Don't Start, being a bit less than hilarious, but the anger of the two is infectious, and I can see the ranting being great fun. The risk is going to be that this sneakily tries to be emotionally warm instead of just enjoying the quick spirited fights. There is also the risk that Charlotte is just a touch too annoying.

Still, not a weak start, and I'll be tuning in again next week to catch the next one.

Recommended.
