Interesting series, this one. It's a look at how comedians use comedy to deal with trauma, or how they can find different ground to cover than the usual by digging deep into abusive or difficult pasts. Each episode (of which there are only two) has a selection of comedy from the two comedians of the week, and then an interview with those comedians about what lead them to comedy.
It's a bit painful at times, which I suspect might be the point, but it's trying to walk a very fine line and doesn't always keep quite upright. It's not necessarily the funniest standup that exists, but it's a very small subset of comedy which is featured. I'm hoping that if we get some more of this, Julia Sutherland settles into the role more comfortably, which might help it hang together better.
The topics are as you might expect, covering child abuse, mental illness and sexual assault. So if they're topics that you prefer to avoid, might be one to skip. Not too grim though.
It's worth a listen because it's not something done often (or at least not this exclusively) and it's more or less the only example, but it's a thinky one.
Recommended.
